Goals, Leadership and Big Moments: May’s OPL Men’s Three Stars

Spizzirri, O’Connor and Ball delivered big moments as the race for position intensified across OPL1, OPL2 and OPL3

The race for position across the Ontario Premier League men’s divisions intensified throughout May, with players across the province stepping up in key moments to help their clubs earn valuable points.

This month’s Three Stars feature a midfielder making history on the national stage, a striker leading the OPL2 Golden Boot race and a forward helping power an expansion club to the top of the table. Together, Jacob Spizzirri, Ciaran O’Connor and Jacob Ball played important roles in some of the month’s biggest results across OPL1, OPL2 and OPL3.

Jacob Spizzirri – Woodbridge Strikers (OPL1)

Woodbridge Strikers remain firmly in the hunt near the top of the OPL1 table, and Jacob Spizzirri has been a key contributor throughout that push.

The 22-year-old midfielder has spent several seasons with the club and within the Premier Soccer Leagues Canada pathway, developing into a dependable presence in the middle of the pitch. Composed on the ball, sharp in possession and strong in the tackle, Spizzirri continues to provide stability for a Woodbridge side competing near the top of the standings.

Earlier this season, he etched his name into the record books by becoming the first OPL player to score a goal in the TELUS Canadian Championship since 2019. The milestone came during Woodbridge’s matchup against CPL side FC Supra and highlighted both his quality and the continued growth of the semi-professional pathway.

His performances have helped keep Woodbridge among the OPL1 contenders, with the club sitting third in the standings entering June, just one point behind second-place Oakville SC.

Ciaran O’Connor – Windsor City FC (OPL2)

Goals have been easy to come by for Ciaran O’Connor this season.

The 20-year-old Windsor City FC forward finished May atop the OPL2 Golden Boot race with six goals, helping his club remain in the thick of a tightly contested battle near the top of the standings. His movement, finishing ability and attacking instincts have made him one of the division’s most dangerous players through the opening months of the campaign.

O’Connor’s standout performance came on May 20, when he scored a hat trick in a commanding 4-0 victory over Waterloo United. The result provided a significant boost for Windsor and showcased the clinical finishing that has defined his season so far.

A two-time Team of the Week selection already in 2026, O’Connor has been a driving force behind Windsor’s push near the top of the standings, with the club sitting second at the conclusion of May.

Jacob Ball – Kingston Sentinels (OPL3)

Expansion sides rarely enjoy a season as dominant as the one Kingston Sentinels have produced so far in 2026, and Jacob Ball has been central to that success.

The 21-year-old striker has scored five goals through the opening weeks of the campaign, helping lead Kingston to six wins from six matches and a perfect 18-point record. His goalscoring form has helped establish the Sentinels as the team to beat in OPL3 during their inaugural season.

Before joining Kingston, Ball spent time with Blue Devils FC during the 2024 season, bringing valuable experience into a new-look squad. Since arriving, he has quickly become a focal point in attack and one of the club’s most reliable offensive threats.

With Kingston unbeaten and sitting atop the standings entering June, Ball’s contributions have played a major role in one of the strongest expansion-season stories across the league.

As the season approaches its midway point, performances like these continue to influence the standings across all three divisions. Whether through historic moments, prolific goalscoring or leadership in key matches, Spizzirri, O’Connor and Ball each delivered standout performances that helped define the month of May across the Ontario Premier League.
