Game of the Week: North Toronto Nitros host Vaughan Azzurri in Women’s OPL 1 battle
Two clubs meet looking to bounce back from Week 1 defeats.
The 2026 Ontario Premier League campaign continues this weekend, and at the forefront of the action in women’s OPL 1 is the Game of the Week between North Toronto Nitros and Vaughan Azzurri.
Both teams come into Week 2 with something to prove after losing their regular season opener a week ago.
North Toronto lost 2-1 to Simcoe County Rovers, falling at the hands of several former players including Taliyah Walker and Ashley Campbell. Now, they’ll aim to get back into the win column at Downsview Park to generate some momentum against a Vaughan side who could challenge them for a position high up the table.
The good news for the Nitros was the performance of striker Maya Nikopoulos, who scored their lone goal in second-half stoppage time to provide minor consolation. She was named to the Gatorade Team of the Week.
The Azzurri suffered a similar fate in Week 1, losing 2-1 to Scrosoppi FC. That loss was a frustrating one; they went down at the start of the second half but managed to equalize just 10 minutes later thanks to Joanna Abdelmalak.
However, they gave away a penalty shortly before the 80th minute, and Scrosoppi took all three points from North Maple Field.
This week, both clubs will be eager to add a win to their ledger to give their season an early jumpstart. The two energetic, young sides should provide for a fascinating matchup.
The Game of the Week kicks off Saturday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m., at Downsview Park Field #2.
