From the Pitch to the Boardroom: How the Johan Cruyff Institute x PSLC Scholarship Program is Developing Leaders Within the Game

Mark Parker reflects on his experience and growth beyond the pitch

As football continues to grow across Canada, there’s a growing need for leaders within the game who understand more than just what happens on the pitch.

Through their partnership, the Johan Cruyff Institute and Premier Soccer Leagues Canada are helping bridge that gap. Now in its third edition, the scholarship program supports coaches, players and staff within the PSLC network in developing their knowledge of football business and leadership.

For Mark Parker, Technical Director at Langley United Soccer Association in the British Columbia Premier League, that opportunity became a turning point.

Looking Beyond the Pitch

Parker’s career has been built on the technical side of the game — player development, coaching and building programs. But over time, he realized that wasn’t the full picture.

“My entire career has been dedicated to the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of player development,” said Parker. “But for technical projects to be sustainable and truly impactful, they need to be supported by a very good business framework.”

That shift in perspective led him to complete the Master in Football Business online through the Johan Cruyff Institute.

“I wanted to understand the ‘why’ behind the resources. I needed to learn to speak the language in the boardroom with the executives as well.”

As he put it in a Johan Cruyff Institute feature: “I come from the technical side of football, and now I am moving toward the business side. The Master in Football Business Online has taught me a lot, and I am impressed with the results.”

Learning Without Leaving the Game

Based in Canada, Parker completed the program online — something that ended up being a major advantage.

“In the beginning, it was very foreign to me — online learning,” he said. “But the Johan Cruyff Institute created what I would call a global campus feel.”

The format allowed him to immediately apply what he was learning.

“It allowed me to apply theoretical concepts in the morning and then directly implement them at the club in the afternoon and evening.”

With classmates and professors all working within football, the learning felt practical from day one.

“The students and the professors are all within the game. It worked very, very well for me.”

Understanding the Bigger Picture

For Parker, the biggest impact came from stepping into areas he hadn’t worked in before.

“Fan engagement, strategic management, financial management — they were all eye-opening.”

It reinforced something that’s becoming increasingly clear across the sport.

“We often think in terms of talent, but there is a lot more to the program than just what you see every day on the field.”

From long-term planning to financial sustainability, the experience changed how he approaches his role, and the club as a whole.

Why It Matters for the Game in Canada

As the Canadian game continues to grow, Parker sees education like this as essential.

“Canada right now is at what I would call the tipping point of football in the country.”

“Professionalization isn’t just about paying players. It’s about the professionalization of processes, governance and strategy.”

It’s exactly the kind of growth PSLC is aiming to support- not just on the field, but across how clubs are run and developed.

A Shift in Career and Perspective

The impact of the program has gone beyond day-to-day work.

Parker says the experience has expanded his perspective — “from tracksuit to blue suit” — giving him the confidence to lead at both a micro and macro level and shifting his role from a technical director to more of a sporting executive.

Who This Is For

The Johan Cruyff Institute x PSLC Scholarship Program is designed for people already working in the game who are looking to take the next step within the PSLC network.

This includes coaches and technical staff, club staff and administrators, players planning for life after playing, and other staff working within the PSLC ecosystem.

At its core, it’s for those who want to better understand how football operates beyond the pitch, and how to lead within it.

What the Scholarship Offers

Following two successful editions, the program continues to expand opportunities across the PSLC network.

Through the partnership, successful applicants can receive full or partial scholarships toward a range of Johan Cruyff Institute programs, including master’s degrees in Football Business and Sport Management, postgraduate diplomas and specialized programs, and both online and on-campus options.

The goal is to support education and career development across the PSLC network, helping individuals build the skills needed to strengthen their clubs and contribute to the game in Canada.

More Than Just a Course

One of the biggest takeaways for Parker wasn’t just what he learned — but who he learned it with.

“We’re all in touch right now… sharing ideas,” he said. “It’s a multiplier of football knowledge.”
