Canada’s run at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup came to an end on Sunday with a 2-0 quarterfinal defeat to defending champions North Korea, but the tournament offered plenty of reasons to be excited about the future of the women’s game in Canada.

The young Canadians reached the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2014, highlighted by a memorable 3-1 victory over France in the round of 16, powered by a hat trick from Kaylee Hunter.

Several players with Ontario Premier League connections featured throughout Canada’s run, including Annabelle Chukwu and Olivia Chisholm, as part of a Canadian squad with strong ties to the Premier Soccer Leagues Canada pathway.

The tournament provided another glimpse at the next generation of Canadian talent, with players who have developed and competed within the domestic pathway making their mark on the international stage.
